Corns and Callouses

These collections of hard, dry, dead cells build up over time as a result of pressure or friction. A corn takes the shape of a small cone with the point pressing into sensitive underlying tissue. Hard corns are found on tops of toes, while soft corns are found between toes, and seed corns form on the sole of the foot. Unlike the pinpoint irritation that causes coms, callouses are caused by diffuse pressure over a larger area found on the plantar surface (bottom) of the foot.

Hammertoe

Frequently due to inherited foot structures, this is a contraction of the toe caused by tightening of the ligaments that connect one bone to the other, forcing the toe bones to assume abnormal position. Often, as a result shoes apply pressure to the deformed toe causing a hard corn to form.
